Julia has over 30 years of experience as a teacher and workshop leader. She has conducted classes in creative drama, improvisation, scene study and speech arts at the Royal Conservatory of Music(RCM) and the Kingsway Conservatory of Music. For the Toronto District School Board, she worked for several years teaching Drama at the high school level and directing school plays.

Her passion for the arts developed at an early age studying drama, visual art, dance and music. Diverse training and experience in elocution, scene study, storytelling, singing, improvisational comedy, mime technique, clown, and creative movement continue to inform her teaching.

Julia works with students of all ages and abilities including ESL and special needs students. She enjoys creating an environment that inspires laughter, thoughtful reflection, and cooperative learning where all students can be actively engaged and involved within the context of a structured program. Her goal is to provide activities for students to develop their creative and imaginative voices and make new discoveries about themselves and others. As a teacher she is dedicated to helping students build self-confidence, increase their expressive skills and develop strong techniques for oral presentation through speech arts and drama activities.

Lessons – Speech Arts & Drama

The study of Speech Arts & Drama offers a range of opportunities for students to develop their speaking voice and communication skills. Using the Royal Conservatory of Music Speech Arts & Drama syllabus as a guide, Julia offers instruction to students of all ages tailored to specific needs, interests and goals.

Areas of study include public speaking, presentation skills, voice production, diction and articulation, as well as storytelling, mime, scene study, and audition preparation. Techniques needed to interpret and present various forms of literature (poetry, prose and plays) from both classical and contemporary repertoire can also be explored. Through improvisation, brief talk and discussion activities, students develop the ability to speak with ease and clarity using their own words.

Students who enjoy a structured and goal-oriented program may choose to follow the syllabus curriculum and prepare for RCM examinations in Speech Arts & Drama at the appropriate grade level. Interested students are also encouraged to enter local festivals where they can perform prepared pieces and receive feedback as well as observe the work of other students.

Whether you require short term coaching or are interested in lessons over the longer term, feel free to contact Julia for more information and to discuss your goals and needs.
